I intend to cover what our eventual goals are, how we're working towards those goals, how we're doing financially, and any other relevant information.

Where We've Excelled...

This month has been an amazing one for the website. We broke some new records for # of visitors, we overtook some of our most popular competitors (Plube.com and Goleech.org), and we released some very cool new features. In addition, we've had a surge of additional content, caused by a new tool for our top administrators, which helped make specific tasks much easier for them.

New Features

I'd like to highlight a post that was made just a few hours ago:

http://www.sinlesslinks.com/Movies/worlds-greatest-dad-2009-ppvrip-xvid-devise/

This is an excellent example of what the new "Multiple File Hosts" feature allows. Originally only the top Rapidshare linkset was posted, and the "AutoBot" transferred those links over to MegaUpload and MegaShares, while an excellent submitter Kan submitted linksets for several other file hosts, to make it a post that likely will never be seen without at least one set of working links.

The AutoBot's ability to transfer links between sites isn't perfect, but it does the best it can. Storage.to has a hard time with files sometimes, and it takes a lot longer, but we feel it's a great addition. Eventually we'd love to support auto transfers to Hotfile.com, but there are so many restrictions on uploading and downloading there, that it will be a miracle if we're ever able to pull that off.

Beating the Competition

Here's a great graph demonstrating how over the past 3 months we've overtaken a few of our top competitors, and how this month we've steadily been climbing above them. I personally have nothing against either of these sites, we're all just out to accomplish different things. However I also don't recommend them, due to excessive ads and pressure to subscribe on one and content inappropriate for children on the other (not that we're perfect in either area either though).

Note that we're the blue line.

Where We've Had Problems...

Most notably this past month were bugs in the AutoBot system. For about a week and a half it was consistently adding MegaShares linksets that didn't have any links in them. This was due to some improper linkchecking by the AutoBot system, and it has since been resolved.

In addition, we ran into some communication problems this past month or so. I learned I need to make a more concerted effort to regulate the quality of the titles, etc. we use, and to make sure I treat everyone fairly. Too often good intentions can get lost in translation, and its important that I do my best to prevent this.

Where Your Money Went...

The money for the second server was a huge help this past month. The AutoBot is a direct result of that, as well as the new administrative tool that I mentioned earlier. In addition, I recently launched a program I've titled "SinlessLinks OS", which was made possible by our new second server.

SinlessLinks OS?

Using the new server, I've set up a "sandbox" (aka a Development Area), and I've given out access to this development server to a few programmers that expressed an interest in helping out in the past. Together we're going to be reprogramming the entire site, and adding a whole slew of features. I hope to finish up this "overhaul" in December or January, and when we do, I'll be making all the code for the website Open Source (hence the OS in SinlessLinks OS).

That means that early next year, anyone that wants to can have a copy of the website, along with the entire database. This is being done for several reasons...

First, I want to make sure the website "lives forever". One way to help make sure this happens is to make sure that everyone has a copy, and that if anything happens to the website, someone else can put up an exact copy, replicating what the site looked like the day it went down.

Second, I want the website to always be improving. I don't have time to always work on it though, and so this will allow any well-meaning, skilled developer to make additions to the site.

Third, I can't do this forever. The career path I'm pursuing would be a conflict of interest with what SinlessLinks is, and this is the right way for me to be able to "hand over" the site to the public. No worries though, I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, I'm just making all the preparations way in advance so that nobody will miss me when I'm gone :-).

The Vision...

You've caught a glimpse of the vision in what I've written above, but I figured I'd give you what my current "official" vision looks like:

Welcome to SinlessLinks OS, where every possible online file host is supported, as well as a multitude of torrent indexing websites, and possibly direct links to torrent files themselves. Every quality version of every post is easily accessible, and links are automatically transferred between dozens of file hosts. You can submit a review, rate a particular quality version, or an entire television series. Anyone can post items, but only those by approved posters or given enough thumbs up in the free-for-all area will actually get seen by the majority of the visitors. Any set of posts or new “non-posts” can be formed into a “collection” that’s easily brows-able. The search feature is updated with the new information constantly, and delivers consistent and reliable results, along with matching users, reviews, requests, and more. The best part – the entire operation is open source, copies of the latest code and database are available on the website every day, and the site is handed from caretaker to caretaker to ensure that it will never die.

~SinlessLinks

Support Added for Storage.to and Hotfile.com

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to write a quick post to let you guys and gals know that we've added support for Storage.to and Hotfile.com links.

This means that all our linkcheckers now properly check these kinds of links, and you will be able to properly filter these sites just like Rapidshare and MegaUpload, etc.

You probably have also noticed that we have a lot more MegaShare links now, and we hope to have just as many Storage.to and Hotfile.com links within a few weeks. Within another month or so, odds are every file hosting site that you might want will be available on almost every post we have.

Thanks again to our donators for making this possible. We feel it's a major step forward. I realize that not everyone will like having all types of links like this, but all they have to do is turn it off so they don't see them. Getting links of all types will help everyone, because the site will grow which gives us opportunities to do more. In addition, we'll eventually be transferring every type of link to every other type of site, so it won't matter what links are posted, everyone will benefit.

~SinlessLinks

Well Shoot! What's been going on with the Shoutboxes?

I wanted to take an opportunity to post this little notice letting everyone know we apologize about the shoutboxes being down. After all, we just purchased another shoutbox for our members with the full idea of letting them finally get to use the box without the ever present "Shoutbox exceeded Bandwidth" issues. But more to the point, we are aware of the problem and wanted to let you know that it isn't anything we caused. We just have to wait it out and let the company get their servers back online.

In the meantime, feel free to comment crazy excitement here as I personally know I've missed all the exciting bantor. Well, beginning today you'll get to see that money put to good use.

Starting today, every single Rapidshare link that is posted on the site will AUTOMATICALLY be transfered to MegaUpload and added to the post. These links will be exact mirrors of the Rapidshare links, and therefore interchangeable. The whole process of transfering the files to MegaUpload takes about 5 minutes (depending on how many links there are, it may take a bit longer).

During Rapidshare "Happy Hour" times (2am to 10am CET), the same system will work to convert all our past posts over to MegaUpload as well.

Q: Can I have it transfer it to my MegaUpload Account?

A: No, unfortunately that would be far too complicated, and we don't want to handle other people's MU passwords.

Q: So you're stealing points that are rightfully mine? How's that Sinless?!

A: We're not stealing any points. MegaUpload does not award points for any files over 100mb, and about 90% of all the links posted these days are over that limit. And any of the sparse points we might get will go only towards keeping that account alive, so that your donation money doesn't have to pay for it.

Q: Can I still post MegaUpload mirrors?

A: Yes! Of course! Just because this automatic system will always post them, doesn't mean you can't. The more linksets the better!

Q: Can I setup a system like this?

A: Not one exactly like ours, however if you use Google, you'll find plenty of other sites to help you do this kind of thing.

Q: I did Google it, and it says you have to have a Rapidshare Premium account to do it.

A: Yes you do. Our system uses about 8 different Rapidshare accounts, and it is predicted that it will use almost all their available Download Traffic every day. Yes that means we'll be using between 80-800GB of download traffic a day. Be glad it's not your Rapidshare account.

Q: How can I help?

A: Submit Rapidshare Links, Post Rapidshare Links, spread the word about how we have MegaUpload stuff now, and a little monetary donation will go a long way to helping make sure we can keep the server.

What's Next?

The next thing(s) the new server will be used for...

1) Transfer all MegaUpload Links posted by users over to Rapidshare.

2) Transfer all RS and MU links over to MegaShares, MediaFire, FileFactory, Storage.to, hotfile.com, etc.

~SinlessLinks

We Have Liftoff!

We were able to get a server for the price we originally intended. The processor is 200Mhz slower than I would have liked, but we're still very excited about our new acquisition. We paid for the server today and should be able to start using it in the next 24 hours.

I'd also like to take a moment to simply honor the achievement that humankind accomplished 40 years ago. True, this is the day we *left* the moon, but that's a commonly overlooked achievement as well. Space Exploration would likely not be what it is today if something had gone wrong to prevent the astronaughts from returning to earth. Thank you to the brave Men and Women acrossed the world that work every day to make science fiction a reality. This was dissapointing, but nevertheless it didn't stop us.

However, by the time we were able to raise the funds, the specific server we were attempting to rent was no longer being offered by our hosting company. So to help rectify this, I've emailed our hosting company asking if we can still get the rate that was advertised this morning. I believe we'll succeed in getting the rate, but if not, we will unfortunately either not be able to get the server at this time, or have to look for a different company to host it with, as the next cheapest server we could get is around $20 more a month, which makes it more expensive than our current server.

Just wanted to update anyone interested. Because we already have $45 ready for this month's server fees, which would mean that the second server is pretty much already paid for, and we only need to raise our normal amount.

So it's up to you guys. If we can get the extra money for this server, I think you guys will be happy with what we're able to do with it over time. And if we get more visitors, there will be more people to share the burden of the cost.

And I want to reiterate that we don't make any money off the site. Everything donated goes right into paying for server costs. All of our admins and site partners, etc. are strictly volunteers.

I'd love to be able to do this, but I'll leave it up to you guys, since you finance everything.

~SinlessLinks

Site Architecture of a Rapidshare Site

When the site started up, I knew very little about MySQL or proper database design. Thankfully I got pretty lucky and what I designed worked, though it's far from ideal.

You may have noticed that at SinlessLinks we have a few features that other websites don't have. The most noticeable is the new way to select just what websites you want to view. This is made possible because of something that I've called a "linkset". I can't remember for the life of me if I heard that word somewhere else or coined it as I created the site, but it's that part of the database design that makes it all possible.

A LinkSet is intended to be a collection of links that contains all the links necessary to download and unrar a particular item. Or in the case of YouTube, it would contain all the links necessary to watch a full tv-episode or movie.

Often on other sites you'll see them post a "primary" set of links, and then some alternate sets. On a few "news only" blogs, you'll see a lot of different sets of links in the comments, like you have started to see here more often. This is the "problem" I was trying to solve with LinkSets. Just because the main links that the original poster provided go dead, doesn't mean that the post should be deleted. And anyone that's trusted should be able to add links of any type to a post, and have them show up, but not clutter up the page. It needed to be easy to look at and quickly grab the links you want.

And in TV-Series, I had seen many posts where there were 3 sets of alternates for each episode. Now this is great for making sure there's always working links, but when you're looking at something like Seinfeld or The Daily Show, it's just not practical to have that many different sets of links all visible at the same time. So it was decided that while many linksets can be added, only one will show up per episode. Then as soon as one set goes dead, the other would come into place. (Now mind you this has a long way to go before it's perfect -- we need an easy way to check and flag the links in a single episode or season so that the dead links will go away and working ones will show up -- and we also need a way to view all the links available for a particular episode, a page devoted to that episode mind you.)

Okay, so now that what we were trying to achieve has been mentioned, a few words about how I achieved it, what I learned, and how I would do it differently if I could start over.

The main post is stored in a table of its own. However, this table only stores information like the url, the title, the year, the creator of the post, when it was created, etc. It doesn't actually store the body of the post. Instead, it is linked to a "linksets" table, which stores cohesive sets of links. These linksets have a "Type" which a number standing for Rapidshare, MegaUpload, etc., they have an author, and they have a "status" (which is normally 1 for good-working links, but the linkchecker can switch it to 2 for dead, and we also have 3 for "submitted" but not yet approved).

In addition to linksets, their is a table for series, seasons, and episodes, which help store all the information to make up a proper TV-Series post.

All posts are created when you view them. This has it's up sides and down sides. On the up side, it means that as soon as a change occurs (such as adding a linkset, or adding/deleting an episode) everyone sees that change immediately. The downside is that even one little portion of bad code can slow down or even crash the whole site, because it is run hundreds if not thousands of times a minute. Eventually I hope to create a "cache" system that builds out the post anytime a change is made, and then that is used to display the post to the user.

Some things that I would change about this architecture...

There's no need for the "series" table. It contains redundant information to the posts table, and needs to be eliminated eventually. Not sure if I will ever do this though, as it would be tons of work, with very little speed improvement.

There's no need for the "links" table that I use. Every line in a linkset is stored in a separate row in a links table. The original thought was to be able to store the status of a single link as being dead and show that every time someone views a post. But after trying that, it was just overkill. Besides, if one link in a linkset is dead, it's normally safe to assume that people can't properly use the content at all.

I originally connected a linkset to a post (if it was a regular movie, etc.), or an episode (if it belonged to a tv-series). This was a nightmare, because in order to get all the linksets for the main page, I had to do queries that involved the posts, series, seasons, episodes, and linksets table. While that may be a good normalized setup, it makes a lot more sense for optimization to just have all the linksets directly connected to a post, and then just get the rest of the tv-series information when you have to. This is one of the biggest changes I made in the past week.

Those are really the only things I see wrong with the current database design. Though I see TONS wrong with the code that builds out the posts... the php is very redundant and extremely inefficient. To the point where it always amazes me how fast pages can still load most of the time. I hope to fix this eventually, and make everything object orientated in the process (it's currently procedural), but it's such a big project that I want to make sure all other important features are finished first.

Well those were just some thoughts I wanted to share... it's probably not well written at all, but I hope those of you that were interested actually learned something about how the site works.

~SinlessLinks

Spam Control

I've received a positive response to my recent posts about developing the website, so I'm going to continue that trend.

Today I wanted to quickly talk about something every web developer despises... SPAM. While most of us appreciate the tribute to Monty Python, we'd prefer not to have to deal with it, and we definitely don't want it cluttering up our website.

Spam comes in all forms: email, comments, posts, contact submission forms, even our requests page gets spam sometimes.

At SinlessLinks I have built in a lot of different ways to help cut down on Spam....

One of the most obvious is that anywhere there's a submission page, there's a captcha for the person to fill out. This has helped cut down on the spam tremendously. If a spammer has to do extra work to place their spam on your website, odds are they'll move on to someplace else. One thing you'll notice about our Captchas though, is that they're fairly easy to read, and they're extremely simple. I hold projects such as ReCaptcha in high regard for what they attempt to do, but I absolutely despise how hard it is to read and get the right answer to the captcha. I believe that a captcha shouldn't inconvenience your real users more than it has to. This was one of the big reasons for creating the user registration: our regular users can sign up and not have to deal with the evil captcha's any longer.

The downside to having such a simple captcha system, is that some spam still gets through, even from automated bots. So more needed to be done.

To take the spam prevention one step further, I created what is currently still a hard coded spam filter. It checks every comment against an array of various words that we've found only exist in spam comments. (Such as the names of various adult orientated medications.)

Another deterrent I put in place is "nofollow". Using rel="nofollow" in any links in the comments section helps to deter any spammers, as they won't get any page rank boost, nor will their pages get indexed faster by spamming us. You'll also notice that I don't use BB code. I personally believe that comments are secondary to the actual post, and therefore don't need to use special formatting such as italics and bold to get their point across. Spammers often use these techniques to draw attention to their post, and when their standard posts don't look good at all, they get frustrated and move on.

But alas, even with all these spam prevention techniques in place, we still get up to ten spam comments a day. Now that's not too bad, but Ribbitz and I are picky... we don't want any spam. So our foolproof method is to simply delete the spam. We have a "Recent Comments" page that about 20 admins have very easy access to. Between these 20 people, this page is checked in upwards of 100 times a day, and every spam comment found can easily be deleted by clicking a red "x" next to the comment. Beyond that, there's a "Ban" link right next to the red x. Clicking on the Ban link prevents that particular IP from posting anymore comments, or if they're logged in, it prevents that user from posting anymore comments. Yes we do run the risk of accidentally preventing legit users from posting comments, but so far we haven't run into any complaints of that sort.

From the whole process, I've learned that while you can work forever to create an automatic spam prevention system, the best method is to simply make it easy for devoted users to take care of the spam quickly and quietly.

~SinlessLinks

Here's a pic of just how easy it is for our Admins to take care of nefarious comments:

New Group Management

One of the most important things I've learned over the years is how helpful it is to make administrative tasks easy for those that have to do them.

We have a pretty elaborate and very customizable User Management system at SinlessLinks.com. Each user belongs to a group, and it is very easy for the super admins to change what group an individual belongs to, and emails are automatically sent out explaining the new features, etc. A lot of work done with very little effort by the admins.

One thing we've been lacking though, is an easy way to edit the groups themselves. Before today, anytime we needed to add, edit, or delete a group, I had to manually go into the database to make the necessary changes. This wasn't too bad, since it only needs done every once in a blue moon. However, I like to make a user interface for everything I can, because it cuts down on the work that I have to do myself in the long run.

Today I created a Group Management feature that allows the super admins to easily edit what permissions any group has, as well as add groups, and delete groups (except the most basic groups -- those can't be deleted). I believe this feature will help us keep the site up to date and very secure, as it will be easy to create new groups and grant only very specific permissions to some individuals.

While I can't allow everyone to visit the page and play around with it, I did take a quick screenshot of what it looks like.

~SinlessLinks

Oh... and for anyone wondering, no that's not a frame. I don't use any frames, and avoid iframes whenever possible (I use the new object tag instead if I have to). That's just a scrollable div.

Thoughts on Site Backups...

Hey Everyone,

So every major website such as SinlessLinks.com should have a regular backup system. Even if that system is just that someone does a site backup once a week or once a month.

For the longest time that was our backup system. Whenever I remembered and could be hassled to do it, I would make a database backup and a backup of the various files required for the site. Obviously this isn't a very good system... and potentially disasterous if we were to get attacked by some malicious individual.

So overtime I've been playing around with various automatic backup solutions. Finally tonight I've implemented a custom one I've created that is by far my favorite.

Every night, our database and all our site files are automatically backed up. The database is dumped into a file and then all the files are either gzipped or rared.

Now that much is great, but it's also pretty normal. But what if our server were to crash or suffer a harddrive failure? All our backups are on the server. That's a problem. So I went one step further.

After backing up, the files are automatically uploaded to Rapidshare, and the download links for those files are then automatically emailed out to certain designated email addresses.

I think that's a pretty cool system :-). Plus the poetry of it is beautiful. What better way to backup a Rapidshare Links website than to upload it to Rapidshare and save the links?

Learned something cool while testing it too that will make all of you uploaders as jealous as I am right now. The server that the website runs on can upload 40mb to Rapidshare in about 10-15 seconds... that's insanely awesome. Don't we all wish we had that speed?

~SinlessLinks

Downtime Apologies

Hey Everyone, SinlessLinks here with a quick apology...

Bad News:
Last night I attempted to make some improvements to our Searching system, but failed to test one particular feature before uploading the changes to the website. Unfortunately, the one particular feature I forgot to test had two misplaced parenthesis that caused the server to crash (literally... it was all because of two parenthesis... like these two). I immediately saw the problem and started working to fix my mistake. However, due to one problem after another, we were unable to get the server restarted until about 20 minutes ago.

In short, we had technical problems, and it was all my fault. I'm deeply sorry for the downtime, and I promise you now that it won't happen again anytime in the foreseeable future. I've learned my lesson and will triple check everything before I make any changes.

GOOD NEWS:

The search feature has been improved! Remember how it used to bold like half the page for no apparent reason? I fixed that! And now if you want to find a particular user's profile... say AlexisRod's... you can search for it in the search box and it'll show up! Check out the following link for an example:
http://www.sinlesslinks.com/search/alexisrod

So again, I'm very very sorry for the problems, and we fixed it as fast as possible. We didn't lose anything, and are better prepared for next time our server crashes (hopefully never again...).

Rest assured, no one is out to get us, I just make mistakes every once in a while ;-).

~SinlessLinks

An Admin's Rant...

Please note that this blog post is entirely irrelevant to the site, but sometimes it just feels good to publish what's on your mind and I chose to share it with visitors of Sinless Links.

Department stores and major retailers use a "Code" system for announcing problems over the PA. THis can range from an employee getting injured to a simple spill on an aisle. While they differ from store to store, there is one that everyone uses for the same meaning: Code Adam. For those of you who do not know, Code Adam is an internationally-recognized "missing child" safety program in the United States and Canada, originally created by Wal-Mart retail stores in 1994. It is named in memory of Adam Walsh, the 6-year-old son of John Walsh. Adam was abducted from a Sears department store in Florida in 1981 and was later found murdered. Today, many department stores, retail shops, shopping malls, supermarkets, amusement parks, and museums participate in the Code Adam program. Legislation enacted by Congress in 2003 now mandates that all federal office buildings employ the program.

Yesterday, I heard a page come over the PA announcing a Code Adam. Immediately, I rushed to the nearest entrance / exit door to the store and put it into lockdown with another associate. Protocol dictates that once a Code Adam has been called, no one enters or leaves the premise. Period. Associates from every department went to their respective doors and facilitated with this while management and the parents began searching for their missing child (details of the child omitted to respect privacy).

I must admit, it was an almost chilling experience. The parents were running around frantically calling out the name of their child, and you could hear the fear and panic in their voice. It would be impossible to not sympathize with them, as their desperation was intensely visible and audible.

About half way through this, a lady slowly approaches the front door where I'm at with her two children, both of whom were probably around the same age of the child missing, though clearly not matching the description of who we were looking for. They stand there for about a minute or so and then she approaches me. She points to her watch and says that she has to take her kids somewhere by a certain time and asked to be let out. I apologized, but explained to her that we were in lock down to locate a missing child and that we would reopen the doors once we knew the child was safe. A large crowd was beginning to form outside as well, because they were not being let in either. She began to get angry at me for not giving her this special permission, so I replied that this is the same courtesy we would be extending to her if one of her children went missing (and I proceeded to point in their direction) and then followed up my remark in saying that the only way she would be allowed to leave the building while under a Code Adam was with a police escort. Three guesses who then immediately whipped out her cell phone and dialed 9-1-1 (the American emergency response number).

At about that same moment, the all clear was given and confirmed, so she decided to hang up and exit the premise. On her way out, she muttered something about false imprisonment and was clearly annoyed at me for following the protocol.

Now here is where the rant comes in... I was ENRAGED at her. How dare her think that her little scheduling conflict was more important that locating a missing child. And to think... she had kids of her own!!! I mean, I understand some people are idiots and don't understand the importance of everything going on around them, but she had kids, so I am shocked she didn't have a natural tendency to feel sympathetic in any visible way towards the child in question. I can only hope we pissed her off enough that she doesn't come back to the store, because that blatant disregard for concern and welfare for another individual is horrifying.

In regards to the child, Code Adam was disabled as she was found safely and without other incident. Thankfully, this time it was a success.

Ribbitz works for a retail chain and was present on this day to serve out the Code Adam with fellow employees. He can only hope in reading this small account for what happened that people show greater interest in the well-being of others and less for just themselves.

Where there are People, there will be Drama.

Hey Everyone,

This is the part of the job I hate. I hate Drama. But it comes with the territory (for some reason...).

We've recently had a falling out with one of our staff members Warez68. I believe in freedom of speech, even if I don't like what you're saying, so if you haven't read his account of what happened, please feel free to do so here: http://tinypaste.com/5f10c

I'll go through the post quickly and comment on the various remarks made.

First off, yes we do have a place for the team to communicate amongst themselves. Makes sense doesn't it? Employees in a workplace chat with one another, and we volunteers do the same. It helps make things a bit more fun. Uploading/Posting can be tedious and a lot of work, so we often joke around (occasionally about things that are so rediculous it's obvious it's only funny because we've had a lack of sleep). There's no harm in this. We are professional, but we foster a fun (volunteer) workplace. Google is a great example -- they're an extremely successful company, but you can play video games or take a nap at work, and the meeting locations are igloos, etc. Point being you can be professional and have fun, and we do. That's one thing that makes SinlessLinks a better alternative for posters to share their links at.

I personally, and we collectively as a team, respect and value each and every one of our contributors. Whether that be someone that has full admin access to the website, or some of our valued submitters such as Sofir. I've went to great lengths to make SinlessLinks a family friendly place where everyone has a voice and can give opinions and suggestions on how we can make the site better. Warez68 did a great job at this on many occassions. Much of the details of the way the TV-Series works is thanks to his great ideas. There are still things that I intend to implement in the future which were his ideas as well. I thanked him for those, and do so again now. Warez68 also did a great job of helping to do some quality control with images, etc. Just as he mentioned in his post. It was something he enjoyed doing for us.

Speaking for myself however, I never ignored Warez. We had some disagreements at times about how a particular site feature should function, but I always listened to his thoughts, and more often than not, tried out his ideas to see how they would work. I have a job and a family however, and therefore I am not always around. So when bugs on the website arise, I am the only person able to fix them, and I'm not always here to do so quickly. So yes, others may ignore error reports, because quite simply, they can't do anything about them, and they know I will take care of it as soon as I can. Everyone knows this.

In regards to the Whiterose incident. I will not comment on the issue other than to say that both parties acted childishly. Warez68's "accusations" were unfounded and the claim that reducing a file size gets a person more points... that isn't even possible. The way Rapidshare works prevents an account from generating more than x points an hour. As a result, making your filesizes smaller to elicit more points will yield you zero results. I insist that everyone on staff respect the other staff members and respect our visitors. Neither was showing this respect, and neither is here any longer.

Ribbitz is one of the three individuals that helped make this site a reality from the very beginning. Without him I would not have been able to keep it going when the site underwent some attacks last year.

Ribbitz has never once told me that he believes Whiterose's actions were justified. On the contrary he helped make the decision that Whiterose did not fit in here, and that while Warez68 was also out of line, he had contributed a lot and thus deserved a chance to show he had meant no ill will.

Ribbitz is a great guy, and Warez68 has portrayed him as some sort of evil young child. This is far from the truth. They didn't like eachother, and both you (the reader), and I can admit that we often believe our enemies are horribly vicious evil people, when in actuality they are more like us than we'd like to admit.

To address the comments Warez68 made attacking my own character and regarding the final conversation we had. Warez68 had been having some problems on a private torrent tracker. I was doing my best to offer some of what I've learned about them over the years, and laughing about how it seems the nature of many of them is to make money through underhanded means.

Please feel free to read the conversation for yourself here and make your own decision on the matter: http://tinypaste.com/7a6b5

I said some things at the end that I'm not proud of. My anger got the best of me. But I said them, and I live with that fact. I will not try to hide it, nor could I.

In short, he felt like I had been belittling him, when I was not. I pride myself on having a site that is very much an open and constructive place. So when someone accuses me of running a dictatorship, I do not take to it kindly. I always discuss everything through with the rest of the team members. It is true that I did not discuss it with anyone when it came to Warez68 quitting last night. It was a mutual parting. That's how I'd put it. He had angered me to the point that he was no longer welcome, and neither did he have any desire to continue to be around.

All of it is childish and rediculous looking back on it. I should have held my temper better, but alas, I'm a person who makes mistakes.

Warez68 claimed to directly quote Ribbitz saying that our visitors had no right to complain about items being posted slow. Ribbitz never said this that I can recall. We are here to serve our visitors... the site wouldn't exist without them!

I don't want "slaves" or anything of the sort, and I always very nice to Warez68, except after he cursed me and called me a dictator. Then ironically I acted like the dictator he thinks I am.

The rest of Warez68's comments are biased accounts of disagreements that transpired between him and Ribbitz. No one else was involved in these arguments.

One thing does need set straight however. RESPECT is demanded. That is our one steadfast rule. Ribbitz, Lufrebent, and myself (SinlessLinks) have worked hard to finance and program the website. Many others, including BigCal, Cheeks, Chopper, Warez68, and others, have worked hard to provide the content that our visitors love. Everyone works hard at what they do and deserves to be respected.

Ribbitz is a friend of mine and a valued part of the team. He's a great guy, who did not get along well with Warez68. That's what it comes down to in the end.

There's a full account, that probably does more harm than good, but at least there's been an official response, and those involved can now move on.

Warez68: I've always considered you a friend. I apologize for our latest disagreement, and for the harsh words I spoke at the end of it. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours.

New Feature Update: TV Guide

Well it's official, SinlessLinks.com now supports a TV Guide with a list of the most popular US shows that air including information on what formats we have available in addition to any notes our staff may have about the show (air dates getting bumped, etc).

This is a really cool feature because though one of our obvious goals will be to upload new shows to a series faster than any other sites, our other strong focus will be on completion of series. Ideally we will eventually have the standard TV releases, HD (720p) releases for newer shows, and iPod format versions on all of them. We have a very unique system that allows us to keep all episodes grouped with their respective seasons and all seasons with their respective shows. We can even post mini-series and other special broadcasts in this fashion keeping everything very organized and easy to access as a user.

Best part is, this feature is entirely free to ALL users. We already have several staff and some users (posters) dedicated to working on various aspects of the seasons (normal releases, iPod conversions etc) and if you seem some part missing that you would like on the site, we always welcome submissions to better complete what we offer to our users. As time goes on, the list will fill out making it a great solution for finding what you are looking for quite fast.

We can't thank you enough for visiting sinlesslinks.com and look forward to welcoming you back as more features are continued to be added. Go ahead and check it out at http://www.sinlesslinks.com/tvGuide/ and if you would like to contribute, just pick a username and e-mail address when you submit a post here.

Ribbitz
Service Partner
Customer Service Department
SinlessLinks.com

Won't Be Around Today

Just letting you guys know I'm having a minor operation done, so I will be out of commission for a couple days. I have a few more security items I want to check out before I switch the site over. I don't have to ask for money :-P.

I thought you guys might like to hear about what we have in store for SinlessLinks!

Optional User Registration

Ever since the site started I had the vision of eventually having open registration, that would allow anyone that wanted to have a login to the site. "Why? What benefit is there?" I'm glad you asked! A user login system allows me to store information that will help make some cool things possible for you, and basically help you customize the site. For example, here's a few things that our staff and the people testing the user registration can already do:

1. Rate Posts -- Tell the world whether you like or dislike a Movie or TV-Show, etc. through a system of 1-5 "Smileys"

2. Favorite Posts -- Mark posts as being your favorite, so you can revisit them later, and so they show up on your profile page.

3. Download Queue -- This is a list of posts that you want to download later, but just don't have time for right now. I personally use this all the time, otherwise I forget what I wanted to watch next!

4. Profile Page -- Have a simple little profile that lists your favorite posts, your top rated posts, shows your avatar, and some other cool features that don't exist yet.

5. Post Comments Easier -- No captcha or Username/Email entry if you're already logged in.

6. Get Promoted -- Once you have a login, it's really easy for us to "upgrade" you to someone who can edit TV-Series or create/update posts.

And here are some of the features that we should have finished before User Registration is enabled:

1. Currently Listening To/Playing/Watching/Using -- Tell the world what you're up to right now.

2. Friends and Messaging System -- Have a quick way to check out what your favorite posters are up to, and be able to send messages to other members on the site (great for saying thanks).

3. Donators will recieve extra cool features like:

      a. Have a special page to discuss things with the site Staff (what needs fixing, etc.)

      b. Choose the color of your username just like our staff can.

      c. View a list of everything that's been released recently, on release sites, as well as other rapidshare sites. (may be available to everyone, haven't decided yet)

      d. Don't like the ads? Help us out a little bit and get rid of them.

      e. Many more features to come!

4. Save all your settings. If you prefer to view by thumbnails and order posts by last updated, your profile will automatically remember your preference when you're logged in. It will also remember if you want to see the titles and/or air-dates for TV-Series, or have them hidden. It will remember all sorts of settings like this.

5. Many more features to come! (Including forum in the future)

Improved Top Ten

The top ten page is pretty cool. Check it out if you haven't already. This page will be getting some cool new statistics, etc. over the coming months. Once user registration opens up, the top rated posts will be much more interesting to check out every day too :-).

Reorder Download Queue

Right now you can add things to your download queue, but they just display in alphabetical order. Soon I'll be making it so that it's ordered by first added to most recently added, and allow you to move things up or down the list as you want.

FAQ System

We have a lot of tutorials and frequently asked questions we want to put up on the site. It's up to me to get this system created so people can start helping out with it.

Forum

We won't become a forum site, but we will have a complete forum integrated with the rest of the user login system (one user login for everything). This way people that want to discuss, etc. can do so. And if you prefer to get rapidshare links from a forum type view, SinlessLinks will now have a place for you :-).

User Polls

We want to be able to ask you guys how you found us, what your favorite Television Series is, or what you think should get done next. I need to create a system for doing this, just need more time!

Move to the Dedicated Server

Obviously right now my top priority is to get the site moved over to the dedicated server. This will take a lot of time on my part, but I do look forward to the challenge.

More Staff Tools

We've got an arsenal of tools that help our staff to be more efficient and help us make sure we don't forget any TV-Shows, etc. I need to improve these tools, and we have some cool new ideas we're working on too.

Have all Quality types of Movies Linked

This will help you check out movies easily. Want to get the Dark Knight in the best quality we have available, but don't want to have to figure it out for yourself? We'll link all the Dark Knight posts together, with the best quality showing up by default, so that you never have to wonder again.

Multiple Languages

Speak German better than English? How about French? We want to have the ability to have each post custom translated by our visitors, so that people can easily choose what language they want to view the post in, and we'll treat our global community with the proper respect they deserve.

Different File Hosting Sites

We know not everyone likes rapidshare. And you should have the freedom to choose. Eventually we want to provide you the option to view only links that are on your favorite file hosting site. Odds are we won't have a whole lot at the beginning, but over time I think people will add them. This way the same post can have different file hosting sites links added, and you'll only see the posts that have the kind you're looking for. (Or see all posts, with rapidshare links by default, and then if they have your sites links, you see those instead.)

---------------------------

Alright, that's about all I want to discuss for now. There is more, but my time would better be spent on getting the dedicated server set up ;-). Feel free to leave a comment letting me know what you think about what we have planned!

~SinlessLinks

One Time Financial Need

Hey Guys,

As you know, a couple days ago we asked for donations so we could get the site on a dedicated server. Since then I've updated you guys that I'd submitted the order for the server.

This morning I was happy to hear that the server should be set up by the end of business hours on Tuesday. The bad news is that we need a bit more financial help.

The company we're renting the server from runs all billing periods from the 1st of the month through the end of that month. So we "prepaid" for an entire month, which will start on October 1st. Because we're getting the server 9 days before the month is over though, we have a pro-rated fee we have to pay for these couple days in September. This is a legit request on their part, and while unexpected, it's not unreasonable.

So we have a need for $17.92 to pay for this month's hosting costs. Because paypal takes out a little bit from every donation we recieve, we need roughly $19 in donations to cover this cost. I would pay it myself, or chip in, but I just checked my bank account, and let's suffice to say I can't at the moment. If this changes in the next couple days, I'll definitely do my part.

I would request that if you already donated to help pay for the server, that you not feel any obligation to help pay for this surprise cost. We do need help however, so if you want to help out, now is definitely the time.

If you do wish to donate, you can do so by clicking here:

And just to reassure you guys I'm not swindling you, here's a copy of part of the email I recieved letting me know of the charge:

--------------------------------------------------------------------

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; The total cost was $64 and change, and after paypal taking their cut out of the donations we recieved, we had $62. That's awesome! Any day that it only costs me $2 to help pay for the site is a great day.

So the current status is that we've submitted our order, and now just have to wait for the server to be set up. Because it's a weekend though, I estimate it being done by 3pm on Monday (GMT). Then it'll be onto the fun part of making the server secure and getting it all set up.

Quickly wanted to apologize for the long downtime last night. Same as before, not our fault, and it sucks. Another week and those problems will be a thing of the past.

Wanted to thank Ribbitz for the cool addition of the shoutbox to the blog page! I hadn't even thought about doing that, and it's definitely very cool. Thanks man!

For now it's back to business as usual, since the problems we were having yesterday are gone for now, and there's still a lot of stuff to post :-). So for all our contributors, keep up the awesome work, and I'll play my part in getting us on the new server.

~SinlessLinks

Thankyou!! And more downtime...

Hey Everyone!

Wanted to thank everyone that donated money to help us get a dedicated server. I am immensely grateful!

Now I want to quickly mention that yes, we are again (at this particular moment) experiencing downtime. I've talked to the support guys, and it is exactly as I described before: another website on our server is causing the problem. This means that as soon as we're on a dedicated server the problem will vanish forever. As for when the website will be back up, whether it's down for everyone or just some people, etc. I don't know. We can only hope for the best.

I imagine some of you (especially those that donated) are thinking:

"What the heck? They just asked for money to solve the problem, and it's not solved!?!"

Well please understand that while we now have the resources we need, it does take time to make the move to a dedicated server. I have to wait until during business hours of the country that the hosting company is in. That's going to be a little while. Then after making contact with them, I'll actually have to place the order and send the payment. That'll happen quick, but then we have to wait for them to process the order and set up the server. That will hopefully happen within 24 hours, but if they're not open on weekends, none of this process will get started until Monday. And even once they've processed the order and we're hooked up with our dedicated server, we still have to set it all up, which is a time consuming process that we won't be rushing. It's important that we make sure the server is very secure, and that the site is going to run well. Once we have the site set up, then we have to change the DNS servers, which can take 24-48 hours.

So while I'm going to work as fast as I can, there's a good chance we won't actually be up and running on the dedicated server until Wednesday or Thursday of next week (almost 7 days from now). This is why I wanted to get the money now, so that we can get the whole process started.

We'll keep you guys updated! And in the meantime, happy downloading!

Thanks again guys!

~SinlessLinks

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sinlesslinks.blogspot.com/2008/09/thankyou-and-more-downtime.html' title='Thankyou!! The site can't survive with the current setup we have. We need a dedicated server just like all the other sites have. We can't afford it right now, and I as one of the site creators literally cannot afford to put any money into it because of my financial situation.

There's nothing more I can do. The problem isn't because of my code but because of our lack of financial support. We get about 30 cents a day, which is roughly $10 a month. We need $65 a month minimum (we actually need more than that, but that's a start).

To explain, for $10 a month, all we can afford is what's called "shared hosting". This means that we share webspace with thousands of other sites. What's happening right now (and every other time we have technical problems), is that one of those sites is messing up, which in turn messes us up. Once we get the $65 a month, we can move to our own server, where that won't be a problem anymore. It will also mean we can do some much cooler stuff, and the website should run a little faster.

We're all volunteers. We've worked so hard to get the site to where it is today... and we need your help guys! Please!

You can donate using the donate button on the website, and literally any amount helps. We have about 750 visitors that come back to the site daily. If we had even fifty cents a month from you guys, we could do some AMAZING things. So please... consider anything! I checked everything, and everything is exactly the way it should be. So I emailed our host and they got it sorted out ASAP.

I'm furious. Absolutely furious. This kind of junk keeps happening. Our website code functions perfectly (It's been tested into the ground, and our test server NEVER has these problems). I really really want to have a virtual dedicated server with some company that we won't have these problems with. Problem is our budget. We currently only make about $100 A YEAR off of Ads and Donations. Our hosting costs more than this, let alone some of the other expenses we have, so 4 of the staff members are currently donating not only their time, but their money as well. So I'm begging you people, tell your friends about us. We think we're a great site, and honestly can't figure out why we don't get more visitors. If you have comments on that, feel free to let them known here. Otherwise tell everyone you know! Tell people to stop supporting the awful RS blogs out there and give us a chance. The more visitors we have, the more money we have to spend on the on the site, and the better website host we can have, so the better service we can provide you! In short, you telling friends or making donations, means a better experience for you when you visit our site.

New Logo in the Works and Quality Control

We've got a new graphics guy helping us out now. Not sure whether he'll stick around and continue to help us out, or is just going to do the logo redesign for us, but he's doing some pretty cool work!

I'd estimate that within the next two weeks you'll see the "SinlessLinks" banner change to something a bit more professional and a lot less blurry. We like the old logo, and it's what gave us our start, but it's been resized so many times, etc. that it doesn't look quite as good anymore.

We're always looking for people that can do some unique things and do them well.

One area that we could use someone is what I would call "quality control". Basically someone who can go through the posts every day (new posts and old), and double check that the titles are formatted in a uniform way, make sure the images are the best we can find and working properly (and if not replace the image with a better one), make sure the info link is the link that will provide the best information, and go through all the TV-Series and insert titles and/or air dates and make sure all the information is correct.

If you think you'd be up for this, find a couple things of the items mentioned that need fixing and submit them to our "submit links" area under the title "Quality Control" and with any random image and info link. (Just put all your comments/changes in the "Links" area -- that can take more than just links.)

Alright, back to the grindstone!

~SinlessLinks

User Comments Complete

You can now post comments on User's Profiles just like you can posts. The intention of this will be to provide more convenience for the users and allow them to build a profile similar to the staff's profiles. The biggest part of this is the ability to slowly give a user more responsibility (allowing them to create their own posts without needing to have them approved, the ability to chat with the staff on special forums, etc). We have several cool features already created that are currently being used and tested by a few individuals.

I'm currently working on allowing people to post comments on User Profiles just like they currently can with posts. This isn't a whole lot of extra work, it's actually very little work. It's taken me forever simply because I've been so busy with work and personal life that I haven't gotten the chance to do it (I don't get paid for my part at SinlessLinks -- no one does). Hopefully it'll be finished soon and I can move on to other items.

I have been working on some stuff behind the scenes at SinlessLinks, and let me tell you, it is really cool. The guys that contribute to the site are all great guys and really helping make the site an awesome place to be.

Alright, I suppose I should get back to actually working on the site. Though I'll most likely end up just watching some Dead Like Me and catching a nap (not cuz I'm a slacker but because I'm worn out from work).

~SinlessLinks

Staff Blog Initiation

Everybody...
